M-1 Student Visa

For students joining vocational or non-academic training programs.

J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa

For students or participants joining approved exchange visitor programs.

Basic USA Student Visa Requirements

Students generally need:

  • Valid passport
  • Admission from a SEVP-certified school or approved exchange program
  • Form I-20 for F-1 / M-1 students or DS-2019 for J-1 exchange visitors
  • DS-160 confirmation page
  • Visa appointment confirmation
  • SEVIS fee payment confirmation
  • Visa application fee receipt, if applicable
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • English test results, if required by the institution
  • Financial proof for tuition, living, and travel expenses
  • Statement of Purpose / study plan
  • Proof of strong academic and career intent
  • Documents showing intention to follow visa conditions

The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application, and students are asked to provide their SEVIS ID from the I-20 or DS-2019 while completing it.

Visa Interview

During the visa interview, the consular officer may review your study plan, academic background, financial ability, chosen university, and intention to return or comply with visa conditions after completing your studies. Additional documents may be requested based on your profile and country of application.

Entering the USA

A visa allows you to travel to a U.S. port of entry and request admission. Final entry is decided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. Students should carry important documents such as passport, visa, Form I-20 or DS-2019, admission letter, and financial documents while travelling. The U.S. Department of State notes that a visa does not guarantee entry into the United States.
