UAE Freelancer and Self-Employed Residence Visa

The UAE offers residence pathways for eligible freelancers and self-employed professionals who wish to live and work independently without being sponsored by a traditional employer.

One of the main long-term options is the five-year Green Residence, which is available to qualifying freelancers and self-employed individuals on a self-sponsored basis.

Who May Qualify?

This route may be suitable for professionals working independently in areas such as:

  • Media and content creation
  • Marketing and communications
  • Information technology
  • Design and creative services
  • Education and training
  • Consulting
  • Digital and professional services
  • Other activities approved by the relevant licensing authority

Green Residence Requirements

Applicants for the freelancer or self-employed Green Residence must generally:

  • Hold a valid freelancing or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation
  • Hold at least a bachelor’s degree, specialised diploma or equivalent qualification
  • Demonstrate stable income or sufficient financial solvency
  • Show annual freelance income of at least AED 360,000 during the previous two years, or the equivalent in foreign currency, where this criterion applies

Applicants may also need to obtain a freelance permit or professional licence from an approved mainland, free-zone or government authority before applying for residence.

Important Information

A freelance permit, trade licence and residence visa are separate approvals. Holding a residence visa does not automatically authorise every type of commercial activity. Applicants must ensure that their licensed activities accurately cover the services they provide.

The term “freelancer visa” is often used generally in the market, but the actual arrangement may consist of a freelance permit, establishment card, entry permit and residence permit issued through the relevant authority.
