Canada Visit Visa

Canada is a popular destination for tourism, family visits, business travel and short-term international experiences. From multicultural cities and historic attractions to the Rocky Mountains, Niagara Falls and spectacular national parks, Canada offers something for every traveller.

A Canada Visitor Visa, also known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), allows eligible foreign nationals to travel to Canada temporarily. Depending on nationality and method of travel, some visitors may require an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead of a visa.

What Can You Visit Canada For?

A Visitor Visa may be suitable for:

  • Tourism and Holidays
  • Visiting Family or Friends
  • Attending Business Meetings, Conferences or Events
  • Short Recreational or Permitted Educational Activities
  • Receiving Medical Treatment
  • Transiting Through Canada (where applicable)
Important:

A visitor visa does not normally permit employment or long-term study in Canada.

How Long Can You Stay?

Most visitors are normally allowed to remain in Canada for up to six months per visit. The border services officer makes the final decision on the permitted duration at the time of entry.

A visitor visa may be issued for single or multiple entries and can sometimes remain valid for up to 10 years, subject to passport validity, biometrics and visa conditions.

Canada Visit Visa Application Process

Extending Your Stay

Travellers wishing to remain in Canada longer should apply for a Visitor Record, preferably at least 30 days before their authorised status expires.

A Visitor Record extends temporary status inside Canada but is not a new travel visa.
