UK Student Visa
The UK Student Visa allows eligible international students aged 16 or over to study with a licensed UK education provider.
It has replaced the former Tier 4 (General) Student Visa. Applicants must have an unconditional offer from a licensed student sponsor and receive a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, commonly known as a CAS, before applying.
Basic Requirements
Students generally need:
- A valid passport or recognised travel document
- Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies
- An offer from a licensed student sponsor
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- Evidence of English-language ability
- Proof of funds for tuition fees and living costs
- Tuberculosis test results, where required
- Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate, where applicable
- Parental consent and relationship evidence for applicants under 18
- Financial-sponsor consent, where applicable
- Visa application fee and Immigration Health Surcharge
Additional evidence may be requested depending on the student’s nationality, course and personal circumstances.
UK Student Visa Process

Submit the required academic and supporting documents to the selected institution.

Receive the Course Offer
Receive and review the offer from the UK education provider.

Obtain the CAS
Once the required conditions are met, obtain your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS).

Prepare Financial and Visa Documents
Prepare proof of funds, passport, academic records, English-language evidence and other required documents.

Submit the Student Visa Application
Complete the online Student Visa application and pay the applicable fees and Immigration Health Surcharge.

Complete Biometrics and TB Test, Where Required
Attend the required biometrics appointment and complete a tuberculosis test where applicable.

Receive the Visa Decision
Wait for the UK authorities to process your application and issue the visa decision.

Travel to the United Kingdom
After receiving your visa, complete your pre-departure preparations and travel to the UK.
Applicants applying from outside the UK may generally submit their Student Visa application up to six months before the course begins. A decision is commonly issued within approximately three weeks, although processing times can vary depending on individual circumstances and current UKVI processing conditions.
Work While Studying
Eligible students studying a full-time degree-level course with a qualifying higher education provider may generally work:
- Up to 20 hours per week during term time
- Full-time during official course vacations
Students studying a qualifying course below degree level may generally work up to 10 hours per week during term time. Part-time students and certain other students may not have permission to work. The exact conditions will be stated on the student’s immigration permission.
Students cannot normally:
- Be self-employed
- Work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
- Claim public funds
- Work beyond the hours permitted by their visa
Graduate Visa
Eligible students who successfully complete an approved UK qualification may apply for the Graduate Visa from within the UK.
The Graduate Visa generally allows eligible graduates to stay and work for:
- Two years when applying on or before 31 December 2026
- Eighteen months when applying on or after 1 January 2027
- Three years after completing a PhD or other doctoral qualification
The Graduate route is unsponsored and allows most types of employment, but it does not itself lead directly to settlement.
Dependants
Students cannot automatically bring family members under every course.
A partner and eligible children may generally accompany:
- A government-sponsored student studying a course lasting more than six months
- A student undertaking a qualifying PhD, doctorate or research-based postgraduate degree lasting at least nine months
Most students undertaking taught master’s degrees starting on or after 1 January 2024 cannot bring dependants under the Student route unless another exception applies.
Child Student Visa
The Child Student Visa is intended for children aged 4 to 17 who have an unconditional offer from a licensed independent school in the UK.
Applicants generally need:
- A valid CAS from the school
- Suitable accommodation and care arrangements
- Sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses
- Consent from a parent or legal guardian
- Evidence of the relationship with the parent or guardian
Children aged 16 or 17 studying certain eligible courses may qualify under either the Child Student or Student route, depending on their circumstances.
Short-Term Study Visa
The Short-term Study Visa is specifically for applicants aged 16 or over undertaking an English-language course lasting:
- More than six months
- No longer than eleven months
Applicants cannot work, extend the visa or bring dependants under this route. Courses lasting six months or less may normally be studied under the Standard Visitor route, while longer courses generally require a Student Visa.
