Canada is one of the world’s most popular destinations for skilled professionals, families, students and entrepreneurs. Known for its strong economy, multicultural society, high-quality education and excellent standard of living, Canada offers several pathways for eligible applicants seeking permanent residence.

Canada has 10 provinces and three territories, each offering distinct opportunities based on regional workforce and economic requirements. Applicants may qualify through a federal immigration program, a Provincial Nominee Program, family sponsorship or another eligible pathway.

Express Entry is the online system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada—IRCC—to manage applications under three federal economic immigration programs:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program
• Federal Skilled Trades Program
• Canadian Experience Class

Eligible applicants create an online profile and enter the Express Entry pool. Profiles are ranked using the Comprehensive Ranking System, commonly known as CRS. IRCC then invites selected candidates to apply for permanent residence through general, program-specific or category-based invitation rounds.

The Federal Skilled Worker Program is intended for qualified professionals with eligible foreign or Canadian work experience.

Applicants must generally:

• Have at least one year of continuous, paid skilled work experience obtained within the previous 10 years
• Have work experience in a NOC TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation
• Meet the minimum language requirement
• Obtain an Educational Credential Assessment for eligible education completed outside Canada
• Score at least 67 out of 100 under the Federal Skilled Worker selection factors
• Demonstrate sufficient settlement funds, unless exempt

Applicants may receive points for:

A score of at least 67 out of 100 may allow an eligible applicant to submit an Express Entry profile. Receiving 67 points does not guarantee an Invitation to Apply or permanent residence.

Canada classifies occupations through the National Occupational Classification system. The current system uses TEER categories, which consider the training, education, experience and responsibilities normally required for an occupation.

For the Federal Skilled Worker Program, eligible work experience must generally fall within:

• TEER 0: Management occupations
• TEER 1: Occupations usually requiring a university degree
• TEER 2: Occupations usually requiring a college diploma, apprenticeship training of two or more years, or supervisory experience
• TEER 3: Occupations usually requiring a college diploma, apprenticeship training of less than two years, or more than six months of on-the-job training

Your job title alone is not sufficient. Your actual duties should substantially match the lead statement and main duties of the selected NOC occupation.

The Comprehensive Ranking System awards candidates a score of up to 1,200 points. The score may consider:

Candidates with competitive CRS scores may receive an Invitation to Apply, or ITA, during an Express Entry invitation round. The required score is not fixed and may differ depending on the type of draw.

The Federal Skilled Trades Program is intended for qualified workers with experience in eligible skilled trades.

Applicants generally require:

• At least two years of eligible skilled-trade experience within the previous five years
• The required English or French language ability
• A valid full-time Canadian job offer for at least one year, or
• A Canadian certificate of qualification in the relevant skilled trade

Eligibility depends on the applicant’s occupation, work experience and ability to meet the requirements of the applicable trade.

The Canadian Experience Class is intended for applicants with eligible skilled work experience gained in Canada while authorized to work.

Applicants generally require:

• At least one year or 1,560 hours of eligible Canadian work experience
• Experience gained during the three years before applying
• Paid work experience in a TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation
• The required English or French language level for their occupational category

Canadian Experience Class applicants are not normally required to provide proof of settlement funds.

IRCC accepts the following approved language tests:

Federal Skilled Worker applicants generally require at least CLB 7 in all four language abilities for their first official language.

Canadian Experience Class requirements depend on the applicant’s occupation:

• TEER 0 or 1: CLB or NCLC 7
• TEER 2 or 3: CLB or NCLC 5

Language results must remain valid when the Express Entry profile is created and when the permanent residence application is submitted.

Proof of funds may be required under the:

• Federal Skilled Worker Program
• Federal Skilled Trades Program

It is generally not required for Canadian Experience Class applicants or for certain applicants who are authorized to work in Canada and hold a valid qualifying job offer.

The required amount depends on family size and is updated periodically by IRCC. Funds must be legally available, transferable and not borrowed. Applicants should check the latest government requirement before submitting their profile or application.
