Basic Eligibility Requirements
Applicants generally need to:
Be outside Australia when applying
Have an eligible prospective spouse sponsor the application
Be at least 18 years old
Have met the prospective spouse in person as adults
Know each other personally
Intend to marry while the visa is valid
Provide evidence of a genuine relationship and intention to marry
Meet health and character requirements
Satisfy relevant immigration-history requirements
The sponsor is generally required to be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Evidence of the Relationship
Applicants may need to provide:
Evidence that the couple met face-to-face as adults
Communication and travel records
Photographs and evidence of time spent together
Statements explaining the history of the relationship
Evidence of wedding arrangements
A letter from the proposed marriage celebrant or officiant
Statements from two adult witnesses who know the couple
Can Family Members Be Included?
Eligible members of the family unit may be included when the visa application is lodged.
A dependent child may also be added after lodgement but before a decision is made. Family members applying with the main applicant must be outside Australia and satisfy the relevant health and character requirements.
Where Must the Applicant Be?
The applicant and accompanying family members must be outside Australia when the application is submitted.
After the visa is granted, the applicant must enter Australia within the period specified in the visa grant letter.

After Marriage
After marrying the prospective spouse, the visa holder may apply in Australia for the:
Subclass 820 – Temporary Partner Visa
Subclass 801 – Permanent Partner Visa
The Partner Visa application should be submitted before the Subclass 300 visa expires. Eligible Subclass 300 holders may also receive a reduced Partner Visa application charge when applying within the required period.

The applicant must marry the nominated prospective spouse within the visa-validity period and submit a separate Partner Visa application to pursue permanent residence.
